Description
An account of the resource
Infantry swords of this pattern are called Model 1742 because they are shown in illustrations of that date prepared for the Duke of Cumberland. It was probably in use for some years prior to that time. Several variations are known. This type has a brass hilt cast in two pieces (grip plus pommel; knuckle bow plus counterguard). A simple knuckle bow spreads into a heart-shaped counterguard with a raised border and center ridge. Its curved single-edged blade bears marks of Germanic origin.

An account of the resource
Further simplification of the brass bilobate style is evident in this example. Although the triple tail at the knuckle bow's base is still present, only two branches remain on each side - with the lower one retaining the curved form of earlier days. Note the large brass ropes encircling the grip, as well as the ball pommel and separate capstan (both ferrules are replacements). Its double-edged straight blade includes a center ridge.

Description
An account of the resource
A hollow ivory grip with a green dyed spiraled surface adds color to this slender iron'hilted sword. Its faceted olive type pommel secures the tip of a slender knuckle bow, which, in turn, divides near its base to form an outboard horizontal guard ring. The hilt is separated from its light cutting blade by an elliptical iron washer which was common for this pattern style. The blade here was slightly shortened at one time, but contains both a narow and wide fuller.

English Long Land Service Musket
Description
An account of the resource
This English Long Land Service, first model “Brown Bess,” Musket was the standard shoulder weapon of the British foot soldier during the 18th century. Although the “Brown Bess” musket would undergo three model variations during the century, its styling and visual appearance changed little.
The English walnut stock supports an iron barrel which is held to the stock by round iron pins under the barrel. The barrel is stamped on top “ROYAL WELSH,” representing the famed English 23rd Regiment of Foot, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. This musket incorporates the typical brass furniture and components of the early land pattern muskets. This brass furniture includes the early trigger-guard design, an elongated butt plate, rounded side plate, and four brass rammer thimbles. The butt plate is marked, 'Lt. Colo Waite'. Vertically within a shield behind the cock it is stamped “TOWER 1728”. The lock plate is also stamped with an English crown and “GR” forward of the cock. The brass wrist escutcheon plate is stamped “B/N9”.

An account of the resource
Fluting and pierced designs have been combined in this interesting semi-basket officer's hilt. Its knuckle bow's upper end is fastened to the pommel ring and adds three outboard branches plus a short inboard one as it descends to join the dished oval counterguard having spokes radiating to its outer circumference. The channeled grip, covered by shagreen (fish skin) is bound by a silver strip and two 3/8" ferrules. Its straight cut-and-thrust blade includes a short 6" back fuller and is marked "ANDRIA FARARA" (a common German forgery).

English Short Saber
Description
An account of the resource
As the dashing Hussars won acclaim from most northern continental countries in the mid 1700's, their uniforms and weapons were closely imitated. This included their light saber with a curved blade. It began to gain acceptance in England by the 1770's for both horsemen and foot officers. This short saber illustrates the characteristic backstrap, squared pommel, and stirrup guard - as well as an added side branch, and outboard guard extension to support it. Notice also the channeled ivory grip and typical curved double-fullered blade (marked "HARVEY").

Description

Not all of these delicate cuttoes were mounted in silver. This fine piece, for example, has a brass hilt. Notice, too, the green dyed ivory grip, as well as the curved pommel plate bearing a raised face, and the contemporary designs engraved on the crossguard. Below the elliptical brass washer is the popular curved single-edged cutting blade. Its two fullers measure 1/4" x 17" and 3/8" x 24 1/4"; the false edge is 8 1/2" long. The vulnerability of these ivory hilts is apparent from the chip on the inboard side which reveals its white interior.

Description
An account of the resource
This hilt illustrates some of the fine cut steel work from England contemporary with the last years of the War for Independence. The spaces between its side branches are now filled with prolific designs creating a semi-basket guard which also expands inboard. The urn-shaped pommel, too, is part of the styling which gained favor in this decade. Fish skin covers the almost recangular grip, and ropes of copper wire wind through its channels. The straight double-fullered blade predates the hilt. Its visible markings read "HOU...FEC" (Possibly for "Hounslow").

Description
An account of the resource
This grenadier's grid pattern creates a surprisingly sturdy hilt. The red wool liner, backed by thin buckskin, remains, but may be a later addition. Its guard opens at the base to form three areas into which project open iron hearts. The antler grip appears to be original, and a flat circular ring secures the top elements of the hilt under the ovoid pommel in typical fashion. Its slightly curving one-edged blade includes the common back fuller. (1/4" X 22").

Title
A name given to the resource
English Long Land Service Musket
Description
An account of the resource
This English Land Service Musket follows the design of the standard shoulder weapon issued to the British foot soldier during the early decades of the 18th century. The English walnut stock supports the musket's iron barrel which is pinned to the stock. The three round iron pins run through the stock and barrel. The brass furniture includes the trigger-guard plate, rounded side plate and an elongated butt plate over the stock butt. The brass thimbles secure the musket's wood rammer under the barrel. The wood rammer is possibly the original rammer issued with the musket. The musket includes the early “banana-style” lock plate which is stamped with the lock manufacturer's name “R Watkin.”
