French Fusil
Description
An account of the resource
This French fusil includes a walnut stock which secures the iron barrel using three brass barrel bands. The stock is surcharged “U STATES” on the butt stock, signifying government ownership by the young United States. This practice was adopted by 1778 to identify government property and to deter soldiers from taking firearms home upon the termination of their military service. The bands are decorated with an engraved scrollwork design along the edges of the bands. The fusil's barrel is crudely stamped “1777” on the barrel tang. The brass furniture includes a trigger-guard plate, flat side plate, and French-style butt plate with short rounded tang. The fusil mounts a French 1754 model lock plate and flat goose-neck cock.

French Infantry Musket
Description
An account of the resource
This model offered advanced improvements in French musket design during the 18th century which would carry into the Napoleonic War years. The earliest muskets of the 1777 model were issued to forces under General Rochambeau's Army who arrived in America in 1780.
The musket includes a walnut stock which supports an iron barrel held by three iron barrel bands. The iron furniture includes the three barrel bands, trigger-guard plate and butt plate with a short rounded tang. A new feature of this model 1777 musket includes finger ridges added to the trigger-guard plate for better handling. The iron rammer includes a trumpet-style end. The musket's lock plate includes another new feature of this 1777 model, a non-corrosive brass flashpan. This model also included a recessed cheek rest cut into reverse stock comb

French Short Saber (Spadroon)
Description
An account of the resource
This expanding guard has a hollowed out knuckle bow into which fits two thin sections that pivot out when needed and lock into position by a spring near the grip's base. A small friction clip from the outboard branch fits through a mid-point hole in the others when closed. The ball pommelled steel hilt includes a dished bilobate counterguard. Its long straight square-backed blade was originally marked "Vive Le Roy", and apparently altered to "Vire La Patrie" during the French Revolution.

This better quality specimen was probably used by a noncom or officer, but it still bears the large military fleur-de-lis stamp on both faces of the blade. The brass is embellished with raised 18th century designs, including a military panoply of arms on the shell guard, while the tapering wooden grip has vertical fluting covering its full circumference. A typical straight single-edged blade bears a 1/4" X 15 3/4" fuller and a 4 1/2" false edge.

An account of the resource
The design of this example is plainer, but it mounts a heavier curved blade and a fighting man's thumb ring. The white bone grip has spiraling grooves through which pass a single twisted copper wire rope. A true flat cap serves as the pommel. The original base ferrule at the other end has been lost. Its smallish cast brass shell guard slopes out away from the hilt more than usual, and the blade's fuller measures 3/16" x 17". A false edge is 4" in length.
